Paris Pact on Water and Adaptation to Climate Change in the Basins of Rivers, Lakes, and Aquifers

The purpose of this “Paris Pact” is to provide recommendations of actions that should be undertaken without delay at the most relevant scale for water management adaptation to climate change – i.e., the basins of lakes, rivers, and aquifers. The Pact also calls for actions of basin organizations and other relevant institutions (e.g., governments, international organizations, donors, local authorities, civil society and companies). Such actions will contribute to reach target 6.4 to 6.b of the SDGs.

Implementation methodologies

Signatories will present the results of their commitment(s) during important international water events, such as the World Water Forum, the World Water Week, the World Efficiency Conference.

Arrangements for Capacity-Building and Technology Transfer

Arrangements for capacity-building and technology transfer will be carried out on a case by case basis, mainly through associations between basin organizations or other relevant institutions.

Coordination mechanisms/governance structure

The “Paris Pact” synthesizes the already existing solid knowledge base on adaptation for climate change in basins, and in particular: A platform of experience sharing between pilot projects on climate change adaptation in transboundary basins A book collecting examples of experiences and good practices for climate change adaptation in transboundary basins (both developed by the International Office for Water and its partners - UNECE among others). It has been drafted by the International Network of Basin Organizations (INBO) and circulated among a group of core partners for revision until the 24th of August. The final version is being circulated through the networks of INBO and its partners since the beginning of September, along with an invitation to sign the document and send presentation of projects illustrating commitments for climate change adaptation in basins (http://www.riob.org/inbo/international-initiatives/article/water-and-adaptation-to-the). First signing and proposals of projects have been received from UNESCO, Medwet, French Water Agencies (Loire-Brittany Water Agency, Rhone-Mediterranean-Corsica Water Agency, French Guyana Water Agency) and the French Development Agency.
