COP29 Baku Ocean Declaration

This initiative emphasizes the critical role of the ocean in addressing climate change by acting as a major carbon sink and heat absorber. It calls for expanded global investment in ocean observation, research, and technology, especially in vulnerable regions like Small Island Developing States (SIDS), to better understand and manage the ocean’s role in climate mitigation and adaptation. It advocates for international cooperation, increased public and private funding, enhanced capacity building, and improved access to ocean data. By advancing ocean science and awareness, the initiative aims to support effective Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), National Adaptation Plans (NAPs), and coordinated global action to meet climate, biodiversity, and desertification goals.
