International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA)

Founded in 2019 by Familia Torres (Penedes, Spain) and Jackson Family Wines (California, USA) to galvanize the global wine community to tackle the climate crisis, the International Wineries for Climate Action (IWCA) is a collaborative working group of environmentally committed wineries taking a science-based approach to reducing carbon emissions across the wine industry. IWCA is member-driven, and all member wineries are committed to the same goal: reaching Net Zero by 2050, while meeting intermediate emissions reduction targets by 2030. To support them, the Initiative offers tools and guidance on emissions reduction, accelerate learning among peers and with outside experts on climate actions strategies, and champion the voices of wineries as leaders for climate action.

Target Target type
reaching Net Zero by 2050, while meeting intermediate emissions reduction targets by 2030 Net zero target
All members of IWCA commit to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2050 at the latest in their company (across Scopes 1, 2, and 3), without relying on offsets. Net zero target
All IWCA members must meet intermediate emissions reduction targets (reductions in emissions per liter of wine produced) between their baseline year and 2050, to ensure gradual progress towards the Net Zero 2050 target. These targets are calculated proportional to a winery’s baseline emissions (most of our members conduct their first inventory when joining IWCA, and we are welcoming new members regularly). Emission reduction target
To achieve IWCA Gold Membership, wineries must self-generate onsite renewable energy equivalent to at least 20% of all energy that the company consumes. Renewable energy target
