The rise of initiatives

Since the adoption of the Paris Agreement in 2015, cooperative climate initiatives have become an increasingly important part of the climate action landscape. Our data reflects this trend, showing a steady growth in the number of active initiatives over time. While mitigation-focused initiatives remain dominant, the number of adaptation-focused initiatives has also increased substantially.

Our data also shows that initiatives are performing multiple and diverse functions. Among mitigation-focused initiatives, the most common functions are knowledge dissemination, participatory management and technical implementation on-the-ground. Adaptation-focused initiatives also frequently engage in knowledge dissemination, but are more often performing function related to funding and institutional capacity building.
